I’m trying to move on and do positive things with my life.How do I open a business?

I realize that my business may really only be crucial for a few months of the year but it would be such an amazing business to have. I want to have a gift wrapping business. Have people bring me their gifts around the holidays and I will wrap them for a small fee…basically depending on size or the amount of packages. How do I go about getting this started and is it a smart idea? I can run the business itself out of my home…and I feel like with my creativity I could come up with some amazing and inexpensive ways to make amazing presents. I don’t think it will fly. First, you’re right, you’ll only have business for a few weeks a year. Second, gift wrapping is usually available in malls, why would someone actually bring something to your house? How are you going to make much money if you’re going to charge a “small fee” and you’re going to offer “amazing but inexpensive ways…”. I think you doing this out of your house is by far the biggest hurdle.
You want to do something positive? Get a real job working for a company or cause you believe in. How about the ASPCA or an organ donor network? Then be contentious about it. Show up every day. Move up the ladder. Make more money every year. Get your degree or your graduate degree. Your plans don’t have to be grandiose to be positive.

I think your idea is great; however, you need to make sure you have a good market before any good idea is started. To put it in simple terms its hard to sell sand in the desert….so I would first start my checking to make sure this is what your market needs. Also, I would get some folks to commit in a verbal way that they would use your services. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this don’t worry about it but don’t start a business either. Even it’s only for few months, it may be something you want to do every season…so building a customer base will be important.
Next, you need to make sure you can get supplies, etc at wholesale cost so you may need a tax resale id number. Once you have everything set - supplies, prices you’ll need to create flyers/business cards to market your business…in fact, you may want to check with some local boutiques to see if they need some help with their over flow - explain how you can assist them without them having to hire extra help during the holiday just to wrap gifts or check and see what space rental is at your local mall….

Go for it! Forget all the warnings and the preliminary market research stuff. This is a low-cost service business and it’s a good idea. So long as you have an avenue to promote it you’ll make money this upcoming season. Even telling your friends (especially guys) to tell their friends should get the business moving.
Ive been a business consultant for 10 years now and I’m saying you have got the right idea.

Hi Katie, My name is Paul Owen. I started looking about 12 months ago Sept 29 of last year. I believe in Positive thoughts for everyone. I was in the hospital at that time for a very bad stroke. I spent all my spare time searching the internet, what little time i had.
