What are the chances of the Cubs landing Peavy before Winter Meetings end?

KU-NCAA Men’s 08 Champs asked:

If the Cubs aquire Jake Peavy in a 3 or 4 team deal, what are the chances of Hendry making a trade with Towers before they leave Vegas? If any. Also is this a top priority for the Cubs? The Cubs pitching would then be phenominal but that was not their problem their problem was to get a lefty in the lineup. I want Brian Roberts and Milton Bradley. How soon is this trade going to come if it does come and is this deal necessary?

50-50. I believe Peavy will be a Cub but it might not happen before the winter meetings end.

the chances are very slim that they get him b4 winter meetings end but they definitely will get him, the cubs aren’t hesitant to give up the talent it takes

    75 percent.
I think the Cubs have a great chance of signing him.

Well, I don’t think it will be for a little bit. At worst he is going to be traded at Spring Training but they are just trying to work some of the other teams in there. They may be trying to get a left handed hitter in this deal as well.

i believe they’ll get him, kevin towers and jim hendry seem to have a good relationship. Peavy has the last word, so i think its just a matter of time. As for priority, they need a true lead off, preferably lefty, or switch.

    *unrealistically wishes for Nate McClouth*

Well for one, Towers said he isnt going to drag this trade throughout the offseason, and he stated that if he feels that they didnt get closer to a trade before the winter meetings are over, then they are going to tell their fans Jake Peavy will be a Padre next year. I do not think the trade will happen because Padres arent willing to take on Marquis contract, thus t he reason they are getting rid of Peavy. Cubs will not take the contract with Marquis on the roster, and thats where there is a problem. I dont see the cubs finding someone for Marquis, thus ending the deal to get Peavy.

I think the Rockies end up taking Marquis of the Cubs hands (- 4-5 million) still paid by the Cubs. I think the Cubs will end up with Peavy but probably after the meetings with Ibanez/Abreu/Bradley in right. The pieces to trade for Roberts will be gone if Peavy is traded for.

I would rather have Roberts and Ibanez. Those two were on base 520+ times last season. Offense was the Cubs thorn in the playoffs not pitching. But then again adding a Cy Young pitcher is never a bad thing and he is half as cheap as Sabathia. If they get 2 very good players this off season it will be a fun ‘09.

Kevin Towers (Padres GM) expected a deal technically done before the end of the winter meetings, with Peavy going to the Cubs, and with a third team involved.

However, it’s not expected to be announced until after the meetings.
